If you don't regularly clean them, old makeup, dirt and bacteria ect can be hidden In between the bristles and help clog poures. (You wouldn't wear dirty clothes or underwear so why put a dirty brush on one of the most sensitive areas of your body). I also feel a good brush is an investment. The better you look after them, the longer they will last. I cleanse with a MAC brush cleanser after every use and shampoo once a week. (Any brush cleanser will do as it sterilises them also)
I remember telling a certain someone off for not cleansing brushes and she gave them a right good shampoo. She could not believe the difference. They were like new. She cleanses all the time now. If she reads this she will know who she is lol.
